Folklore
Events that take place in history that are not written down but merely retold by future generations is defined as being “Folklore.” It is also true that a famous person might do something that was important but that was not written down or somehow recorded with all of the facts that pertain to such an event. There are also those events of the past that cannot be proved as factual because there is no existing evidence to confirm such an event.
However, such “Folklore” can be written as a story that describes that place, that time and that subject event. That story might or might not be true, or only a part or parts of the entire story is true. The behavior of people who became heroes can be true but if the event was not written down or somehow recorded in a history book soon after the event took place, some of the facts can be forgotten or distorted as the story is passed down from one generation to another generation.
That much is particularly true if that story is told by a family member or an associate of the hero, or whoever that might be. For every hero there must be a wrong that needs to be made right. So too, there are many kinds of heroes within any society. Some members of law enforcement become heroes after they bring to justice one or more criminals who thereafter cannot victimize additional honest people. A firefighter can be a hero if he or she saves the life of another person who would otherwise die in a burning building or die in a burning car or die in some other mode of transportation.
Then again, a hero could simply be a Mom or a Dad who raised a family as well as possible and whose children are now responsible adults within the society in which they live and work. Those children speak well of their parents or parent but such is not written down or recorded in history as being a major event. However, some of the children of people who become famous by doing one or more heroic acts do write books about those people, for no other reason than to earn some money from doing so. That is due to the fact that some people want to know as much as possible about those people who somehow made our world a better place in which to live.
Like it or not, deeds that are written and/or spoken about after the event takes place is either “Folklore” or history, depending upon who writes that story and when it was written. Such heroes become larger than life individuals whose act or acts of courage and determination then become “The stuff that dreams are made of.”
