The Basics of Classroom Etiquette

Good classroom etiquette basically defines how you should behave when in an educational learning environment. While classroom etiquette can vary depending on the lesson, class or course that you are on, the basics of classroom etiquette are all the same.

Listen to the teacher

The teacher should be looked at as the head of the class meaning whatever the teacher says is of vital importance. The basics of classroom etiquette come into play immediately when the teacher begins talking. Students should immediately cease their conversations or look up from their studies and maintain eye contact with the teacher. They should not talk when the teacher is talking and they should participate if the teacher asks them to contribute. Good listening skills, general manners and respect come into play as the basics of classroom etiquette.

Do not disturb other students

Some students will find work easier than others meaning that some tasks and assignments can be completed quicker. It is important to consider all of the students at all times however. Whenever a learning session is in progress, it is important to not do anything to disturb other students. This can be anything from talking loudly, laughing or in some cases, even going out of your way to make a scene in the classroom. The learning of other students is an essential part of basic classroom etiquette.

Respect

Respect plays a vital role in all areas of basic classroom etiquette. Students should respect the teacher at all times and they should also treat their fellow students with respect, not just their friends. Students should also treat the classroom with respect meaning they should not write on desks or damage school property in any way, shape or form. If a member of staff walks into the room such as the head teacher, students should stand to their feet to show respect and discipline that will benefit them in later life. Again, respect falls into all areas of classroom etiquette and should not be overlooked.

Proper classroom etiquette can lead to a better education simply because students will be much more likely to succeed. Students with proper classroom etiquette will listen to the teacher more and will not disturb other students and they will show respect at all times to their teachers, to other students and to other members of staff that may enter the classroom. School is just as much about being a team player as it is fending for oneself. And the actions of one student with poor classroom etiquette can bring the entire class down. For teacher, do what it takes to teach proper classroom etiquette to benefit the entire school.
