Are Jocks more Successful than Nerds in the Work World - Jocks
“Ewww, a nerd!” Were the words that came out of the cheerleaders mouth. The nerd then follows his friend into the library for a study session whilst the jocks play football on the field. “Nerd” and “Jock” are just a few labels given to kids in high school. So, do these stereotypes apply to adults?
Thinking about whether nerds or jocks have more success rates really boils down to the person but tossing that aside, I would have to say the Jocks would have more success. These two groups are distinct opposites and stereotypes. What makes a nerd? What makes a jock? It is up to the person only to stereotype themselves in that group.
What makes the jocks the rulers of the work world rather than the nerds?
Having success is not just about the brain which is why the nerds lose out. In family life, the jocks are regarded (generally) as the rich whose parents are important people in society. This means that the jocks themselves will most likely have a place set for them in society. This gives the jocks contacts and the right position in order to succeed. The nerds however, probably do nothing except study relentlessly. Them not getting out of their rooms and into the real world does not give them the experiences with people that they need in order to survive. Movies picture nerds getting the grades and getting the perfect career but they’re movies - fictional!
The skills the nerds possess may seem valuable but it is the jocks who are showing off and getting customers as well as having valuable people skills. In salesmen, it is the jocks who are bringing in customers and making valuable sales. It is the nerds who are stuck in the back room developing the product. They may be the ones who do the actual working but it’s the jocks who get the credit and go to top of the range parties and in the end, get more money.
Aren’t jocks different from everyone else?
The short answer would be no. They may seem different in high school but they change. Jocks are seen to have no real ambitions but what does every teenage boy want to do? They want to build up a huge business and rule the career world, right? Jocks should not be shot down just because of what they do in high school. By the age of 20, everyone has usually found a path they want to go down and have sharpened their senses to know what to do in order to get where they want to be. It is only a small handful of people who become bums.
