Team sport such as basketball, football and soccer underscores the necessity of working together to accomplish essential goals and skills. Players learn firsthand how to achieve success through hard work and perseverance and consistency.
By showing up to practice and playing the game whether they win or lose help the members of the team to recognize that there is a certain amount of satisfaction and honor in playing the game. Members of the team enjoy the benefits of camaraderie, friendship and have the benefit of learning from each others mistakes. They understand how to accept defeat, and acknowledge that other teams can be better. This allows for the opportunity to revamp team by contributing ideas which hones problem solving skills.
Team members begin to see and appreciate the impact each member of the team have on their own personal growth as well as the team’s. This gives players the unique opportunity to put aside differences and learn to work well with others while developing respect for others and accomplishment and individual talents.
Being on a sport team create the opportunity to gain meaningful insight into one’s self. This is the appropiate time to guage reactions and learn appropiate responses to difficult situations. Athletes learn not to become defeated by losses, but to dig in and believe in a win even when the score board says otherwise. It teaches each individual to stay balanced, the up and down of sports teaches athletes to stay on the axis and avoid the extremes of roller coaster emotions.
Discipline:
It takes self-discipline to practice the same routines daily in an attempt to improve skills without immediate rewards. It takes discipline to follow directions that do not coincide with your own vision. It requires a desire to compromise, and learn to trust the judgement of others by following directions and taking the action to execute specific plays. It takes courage to keep playing when you have stumbled and the loss might have been because of an error in your judgement.
Strength:
Playing sports requires mental strength and physical strength. Mental strength will provide the sense of purpose that is necessary to tackle weak areas in your game. Physical strength to maintain a healthy body that can sustain the rigors of team sport.
Development:
After being in this environment players will begin to develop into responsible citizens. As one begins to recognize and accept their own talents; he will gain enough confidence to help fledgling members on the team. Petty jealousies and negativity will be replaced by an eye for recognizing the skills of the other members of the team that can be utilized for the benefit of the team. There will become an understanding that someone else will score the winning goal, and today it is someone elese’s time to be applauded.
A secure athlete will be humble in the face of great praise because he knows that he went to practice and listened to the coach and that every member of his team wants the win as much as he does. He now knows that his accomplishments are not all his own, but a culmination of advice and lessons taught by others. He has learned not to take credit for work that he has not done, and belittle another’s contribution by inflating his own.
Members of a sport team become adept at getting along with diverse groups and personalities. Good sportsmanship become apart of the character because it is a necessary component for the team to survive and then thrives. Once the good habits of team participation and appreciation for its members develop; this valuable asset will become second and serve the athlete as well as the community very well.
