Let’s say God hates gays. Is this a “God” you wish to worship? Of course not. Hate is not part of what a compassionate God would ask from the world.

Let’s also say most civilizations respect the sensibility of separation of church and state. It is what the USA was founded upon; religious freedom, and usually those who argue against separation of church and state, do not want religious freedom for Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, and others. They are confused and misinformed, misunderstanding that religious freedom will not sanction these and all faiths, to be officially recognized in public schools, and other institutions.

There is an old chant from the eighties. “Not the church, not the state, a citizen should choose their fate.”  It works for many controversial issues, like reproductive rights, job discrimination, freedom of speech, and now, most recently, Gay Marriage.

Those who would deny a loving couple the choice to live in a committed, and non promiscuous relationship, are the type of people who want to control what others can, and cannot do. They say they wish to protect traditional marriage, but when one asks, how does Gay marriage threaten traditional marriage, they either shut up, or dig up some Bible verses.

Saying that it is in the Bible, or any scripture, or that Gay marriage is an abomination; is completely irrelevant, due to separation of church and state. It does not address how Gay marriage threatens any other kind of marriage. Saying God did not create Adam and Steve, then, who did create Steve? Is one to think that Satan, (whether or not one believes there is one) created Adam and Steve? Evolution may have created both Steve and Eve, but again, it is irrelevant to how any “marriage” destroys any other form of family values.

“The way we never were” is how some rigid conservatives view the sanctity of the family. They think that when people owned people it was a much nicer world. When women didn’t earn money for their work, or vote, or have a say in child custody, and when monopolizing corporations savagely fought unions, when lynching were like picnics, when abortions were back alley butchery, and when incest and rape happened, (but since no one discussed it), it must have not have really happened! They want to go back to the days when there was no homosexuality; complete denial of reality, in other words.

It must be acknowledged in defense of conservatives that this trashy culture really does make marriage seem like a joke, with shallow, reality dating shows and so on, but one is not talking about cheap marriage, but enduring, committed lifetime unions.

People, black white, rich and poor, straight, or gay, all deserve to have lives where they can share income, health concerns, and family rights, have children, and live in peace. Most polls show that a majority feel discrimination is just plain wrong.

If you do not want that right taken from you, then you should not ask it be taken from anyone else. In other words, if the Bible is your guide you must love your neighbor as yourself, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. What the world needs now is love, sweet love, it’s the only thing that there’s just too little of, letting others have love in their lives is the right thing for earth.
