Urbanization and Overpopulation in Delhi India

Delhi, the capital city of India has really high population and this high population brings many problems within itself. Informal settlements, low air quality and unemployment are some of the problems caused by this high population in Delhi.

Many people are moving to Delhi from the countrysides due to economical activities and opportunities in the city. However, moving to the city does not guarantee a job for people moving in the city. Therefore, unemployment rises as a huge problem of Delhi. Moreover, some people moving to Delhi cannot find a place to stay which results in the problem of informal settlement. More than one third of the population in Delhi lives in slums. This imbalanced structure creates many more problems in the city.

The air pollution, the low quality of air is one of the problems of the city. Delhi is trying to find a solution to these problems. Satellite cities are seen as a solution to the problems in Delhi. Railroads and highways are going to be planned to connect these satellite cities. However, researchers say that this cannot be a successful solution when looking at results of the same approaches of other cities.

On the other hand, the urbanization has an advantage in Delhi. The cast discrimination is much less in the cities which is another reason for rural to urban immigration. Job opportunities and cast discrimination being much less in cities makes Delhi attract people. Obviously, living in the city is easier than living in the countryside. To stop this rush in Delhi, researchers say that the life in the countryside should be planned to be easy as well. It is believed that if life in the countryside was easy as well, there would not be such rush in Delhi.

The city planner’s opinion should be appreciated and applied in India to overcome this problem. In my opinion, an important amount of budget can be spent on countrysides to make life easier and better there instead of spending the huge amount of budget on unstoppable expansion of Delhi. Also, the informal settlements should not be passed over but the government should prevent these structures carefully. The huge amount of informal settlements encourages people to move into Delhi. If these structures were prevented, many people would be discouraged and not move into Delhi. I believe that there needs to be a balance in a country to have a healthy environment so the rush in Delhi should be prevented by improving countrysides and blocking informal settlements in Delhi.
