Magic in the Modern World

People do not grow out of believing in magic. At some point in a person’s life they only cease calling it magic in favor of other terms, fantasy, belief, faith, and countless other terms are just a mask for the magic in one’s life. People need to feel as if there is something more to their mundane existence magic is this sense of excitement they seek.

You cannot think of magic without thinking of literature. Magic has a long history in books from the Arthurian legends to Harry Potter. Each book creating its very own brand of magic for the reader. Each story arising magical world all of its own, with what is possible and not exclusive to that world. Those who seeks magic in their lives can find what they need in the pages of a book; always carrying it with them.

Belief and faith, I think are the two most used magical terms once someone leaves the innocence of childhood behind. If you are a religious person, you may think me crazy right now but look at other religions that you do not believe. Look at the magic there and tell me that your religion has none of that. From the father praying for his child’s safety at night; hoping that his thoughts will somehow convince an invisible being in the sky that his child deserves to be protected over everyone else in the world, to ancient times someone making a sacrifice to to any number of gods for a blessing. Both of these believe in a sense the same magic. There is a certain innocence about it. However, it is still a sense of magic that there is something beyond what they can be seen or felt.

Magic isn’t just limited to religion, an entire industry has been built on tricking people with illusions and sleight of hand. While I think few of the people that goes to the shows believe what they are seeing is real, a lot want to believe. They would like to think that there is something more to life, something fantastic out there. These Magicians, Illusionist, and Escape Artists offer this dash of magic to someone’s life.. While some does try to figure out the trick; others are just struck by awe with classic tricks like sawing a woman in half, or a simple card trick. They really want it to be real, even if they know it can’t be.

Yet others use a form of escapism into games for their fix of magic. Games like World of Warcraft which boasts millions of subscribers a month and is heavy rooted into the magical, fantasy realm. Where they do not observe the magic, but are actually perform it. Sprouting lightning from their fingers, or fire from their palm is another yet another way people seeks out this little spark of something that is missing from day to day life. If they cannot be the hero in real life they pretend to be in these games, vanquishing dragons and evil along the way.

As you can see, magic doesn’t go away when we grow up it only takes on new forms. Having something to shake up the mundanely isn’t a bad thing. It keeps life interesting, just don’t get caught up in it. While it does add spice to life, too much of this spice masks the richness life already offers.
