Living in Boston Pros and Cons

Living in Boston. Aah! Well that experience evokes a few sighs and musings in me. I lived and worked in Boston/Cambridge for a couple of months last year, and have to say they were among the most stimulating and eye-opening of my life. A fabulous public transport system, restaurants and French style Tabacs/cafes at every corner, a singular lack of the freeway-car lobby culture

(unless you want to get on that beautiful Mass Pike and discover the East Coast), summers longer than Moscow’s White nights and some wonderful liberal people, who welcome you with an openness and warmth, from world’s most famous university (Harvard) to world’s most famous baseball team, at Fenway Park. Of course, each place has its price to pay, and one of the ‘cons’ of living in Boston/Cambridge was the unthinkable rents- starting at $ 1200 for studios in Harvard and Cambridge. But despite this one ‘downer’, I loved my time there- as a first timer to the East Coast, who had lived in London, Chicago, SFO and New Delhi among others- this was the friendliest and safest city in my experience, especially as a single woman. Imagine running down your house to buy coffee at 11 at night and picking up toothpaste from the 24 hour pharmacy next door. Waking up to ballet classes in walking distance and walking.. walking everywhere, through the green lawns to Fenway Park, in the all pervasive flavor of that cool Red Sox accent. Boston was once known as the Athens of America- with its 60 universities and collection of Ivy Leagues; from Harvard to MIT, to University of Mass. at Amherst and Boston University.

Boston and Cambridge are called the cobalt in the blue state’ by locals, and I couldn’t agree more. The region was the birthplace of American liberalism, from JFK’s birthplace in Brookline, to the birth of America itself. The anti slavery abolitionist movement was centered here and I cannot recall seeing a greater plethora of tongues and languages in one place. If you enjoy book clubs and music, walking and traversing museums and hanging out in the environs of Chomsky and other world renowned minds, this is the place for you. There is also the hub of cutting edge science with Harvard and MIT placed a few minutes from each other- competing for the best minds in the world and leading to a booming science driven economy. I recommend it, thoroughly, for a taste of Europe with the soul of America, as long as you can afford the rents or find a good roommate.
